Overall, there are two types of teaching methods used today: teacher-centered and student-centered. The teacher- centered approach means that the teacher is the main model and his or her students are meant to receive information passively. In other words the teachers lecture and the students absorb the information, which later is tested and scored objectively to force self-learning on the students (Teaching Methods n.d.). This form of teaching is primarily used in United States classrooms. The other approach, student-centered, focuses on two different learning methods: inquiry-based and cooperative. Although teachers are still considered that main model, the students play a major role in learning, which is hands-on. The teachers give group assignments, portfolios, and expect a class where every child participates. Grades come from many aspects of the requirements, but constantly change as the teacher instruction fluctuates (Teaching Methods n.d.). This teaching method is found in man y schools abroad, most notably in Finland. Researchers have found that this teaching style is most beneficial to students, and students agree. My overall experience with the behavior change project was positive, as I was able to successfully change my sleeping habits. Although there were times when sticking to my behavior change plan was extremely difficult, I was able to stay on track and change my sleeping habits. As a result of my behavior change, I now feel healthier and less fatigued. Because of these physical improvements, important areas of my life, such as school and sports, have improved also. My performance in the classroom and on the basketball court has noticeably become better after making this behavior change. My main goal of getting 8 hours of sleep a night has been met. Because we won the game, we had leave out at 3 a.m. the following morning in order to fly to Washington state to play Gonzaga. My parents were in town, so I spent time with them that evening. I then went back to my dorm and started packing. I ended up getting two hours of sleep that night. The affects I felt the next few days reinforced why I should work hard to change my sleeping habits, as I struggled to perform even the simplest of daily functions. It was absolutely terrible to say the least. This experience motivated me even more the meet my behavior change goal. I definitely believe that this behavior change will serve me well in the future.
